Book details Myler PJ, Fasel N: Leishmania – After the Genome Caister Academic Press; 2007. 306 pages. ISBN 978-1-904455-28-8 Review With the recent publication of complete genome sequences for Leishmania major, Trypanosoma brucei and Trypanosoma cruzi has come the perception of an opportunity to pause, survey and reflect upon the current state of research for these organisms. To consider the shape of things to come and, in particular, how best to modernize future studies by imbuing them with insights mined from the huge genomic and post-genomic datasets now available. Into this zeitgeist a number of books have already been launched starting before the genome publication with useful texts such as Melville's " Parasite Genomic Protocols" in 2004 and then subsequently Barry's "Trypanosomes: After the Genome" last year and perhaps a little more tangentially Olson and Bhattacharya's "The Genomics and Evolution of Microbial Eukaryotes " in 2006.

متن کاملDisclosing 3' UTR cis-elements and putative partners involved in gene expression regulation in Leishmania spp.
To identify putative cis-elements involved in gene expression regulation in Leishmania, we previously conducted an in silico investigation to find conserved intercoding sequences (CICS) in the genomes of L. major, L. infantum, and L. braziliensis. Here, the CICS databank was explored to search for sequences that were present in the untranslated regions (UTRs) of groups of genes showing similar ...
متن کاملTranscription initiation and termination on Leishmania major chromosome 3.
Genome projects involving Leishmania and other trypanosomatids have revealed that most genes in these organisms are organized into large clusters of genes on the same DNA strand. We have previously shown that transcription of the entire Leishmania major Friedlin (LmjF) chromosome 1 (chr1) initiates bidirectionally between two divergent gene clusters. Here, we analyze transcription of LmjF chr3,...
متن کاملThe Leishmania dono6ani LD1 locus gene ORFG encodes a biopterin transporter (BT1)
We have previously described two genes, ORFF and ORFG, from the LD1 locus near one telomere of chromosome 35, which are frequently amplified in Leishmania isolates. In Leishmania dono6ani LSB-51.1, gene conversion of the rRNA gene locus on chromosome 27 with these two genes resulted in their over-expression, because of their transcription by the RNA polymerase I-mediated rRNA promoter. The pred...
متن کاملLeishmania metacaspase: an arginine-specific peptidase.
The purpose of this chapter is to give insights into metacaspase of Leishmania protozoan parasites as arginine-specific cysteine peptidase. The physiological role of metacaspase in Leishmania is still a matter of debate, whereas its peptidase enzymatic activity has been well characterized. Among the different possible expression systems, metacaspase-deficient yeast cells (Δyca1) have been instr...
